As the Santa Barbara Channel Whale Heritage Area (SBCWHA) continues to grow, one thing has become increasingly clear: our success depends not only on our mission, but on the passionate people who help guide it.
In just two and half years, we have built meaningful partnerships, expanded ocean education opportunities, supported whale research and conservation, and connected hundreds of community members and students with the incredible marine life of the Santa Barbara Channel.
As we work toward achieving 501(c)(3) nonprofit status by the end of this year, having an engaged Board of Directors and a knowledgeable Advisory Council is more important than ever.
An active board provides leadership, accountability, and strategic direction. Board members help ensure that our organization remains financially sustainable, fulfills its mission, and builds strong relationships throughout our community. They serve as ambassadors for whale conservation, helping to expand our reach while bringing diverse expertise in education, science, business, law, fundraising, communications, and community engagement.
Equally valuable are our advisors, who offer specialized knowledge and decades of experience without the governance responsibilities of board members. Their non profit expertise, conservation leadership, educational insight, and community connections help us make informed decisions and strengthen our programs.
Together, our board and advisors create a network of passionate advocates who believe that the Santa Barbara Channel is one of the world’s most extraordinary places to experience whales, dolphins, and porpoises. Their collective guidance helps us inspire responsible ecotourism, advance research and conservation, and foster the next generation of ocean stewards.
As we prepare for this exciting new chapter as a nonprofit organization, we are deeply grateful for the dedicated individuals who volunteer their time, talents, and expertise. Their commitment is helping transform a shared vision into a lasting legacy for our community and for the whales that call the Santa Barbara Channel home.
The future of whale conservation is built on collaboration—and we are fortunate to have an incredible team leading the way. It is the spirit of collaboration that will drive our organization forward.
